If you have ever watched the 1985 sci-fi film " Back to the Future ", you may recall a scene where Marty McFly gets himself a pair of Nike Mags that has self-lacing capabilities. And if you thought that such inventions would never be made, you're not alone. Like many others featured in the popular film, this pair of Nike Mags materialized itself as Nike's latest installment.
First introduced in December 2018, the Nike Adapt BB finally made it's global debut on Feb 17th as the successor of 2017's HyperAdapt 1.0 and the latest installment in Nike's boundary-pushing E.A.R.L. (Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing) technology.
Priced as a game changer for smart footwear, The Adapt BB serves as Michael Donaghu's ( Nike’s VP of Innovation ) triumph card to attain his goal of eliminating the use of traditional shoelaces.
In his own words,
Shoelaces: you had a good run. But we think we may have finally bettered you.
The Science Behind
Ok, so now you may ask, what's the point of all this. Isn't this just another marketing gimmick by a renowned company surrounded with much unneeded hype? After all, it's just a recycled idea from an old sci-fi movie right?
Umm, you are not entirely wrong but before we come to an unjust ultimatum and sentence this product to the archives of history, let us give Nike a chance to explain their rationale and I've got to say, they've done a pretty good job at it.
Consider basketball: Over the course of a basketball game, the foot can expand almost a half-size during play. A level of fit that feels comfortable at one point might feel constrictive just 24 minutes later. Because the needs of the foot change at any given time based on the sport, its duration and on specific movements, like a slashing cut to the basket, "perfect fit" is a floating target.
For those who have frequently dabbled in the sport, you may be able to better resonate with the explanation above but for those of us who don't, we have now learned something new didn't we? After much research, I have learned that simple and less strenuous exercises such as walking and running also affects our foot size and leads to an increase in both foot and ankle volume. Hence, the shoe's intrinsic capabilities seem to be beneficial to the general populace as well aside from it's highly niche target group, representing possibilities for the evolution for such a product.
How it works
The Nike Adapt BB employs the use of an intricate lace engine that neatly closes around your entire foot throughout a range of movements so as to provide it's user with the optimal fit. This is achieved thanks to its in-built gears and motors that senses the tension you place on the sole. The FitAdapt chip, synonymous to the brain of the shoe, then processes this data and instructs the underfoot lacing on the amount of tensile strength required to give you a nice fit based on the activity you are engaged in.
Styled in black, grey and a tint of blue, the Nike Adapt BB triumphs in looks and eludes an elegant, classic design. Simple enough for any event yet grandiose enough to impress. Scroll through the gallery to view snapshots of this product.
Nike has made the use of the Adapt BB fairly intuitive with the aid of its companion app which can be downloaded here on the App Store. The app allows you to manually control the tightness of the shoe and customize the colors of the buttons.
The shoe requires power to operate it's internal motors and hence require charging. To make the charging process seamless, all you will need to do is to place the shoes on a custom wireless Qi mat provided with the purchase. A full charge cycle generally takes an average of 3 hours and lasts for around 14 days so I would say that maintaining it is rather manageable.
Trial and tested
In order to gather valuable insights from the field and understand the requirements of players on the ground, NIKE has also reach out to professional NBA players like Jayson Tatum to trial the product. This proves to be critical as it helps to bridge the ideals of both consumers and manufacturers, leading to the birth of a practical and desirable solution instead of an empty product with a decorative husk.
Nike: "That's why the Nike design team invited an elite group of professional players, including Boston Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum, to Nike World Headquarters in Oregon for a run of workouts and pickup games, putting the shoe through an exhaustive trialing period. "
Similar to how Apple provides tech support for consumers using the iPhone, Nike aims to do the same with the Adapt BB by pushing out continuous firmware upgrades over time. By opting in to the program, owners will be able to enjoy new features and services provided by Nike through smartphone-like technology that responds to changing preferences and environment. This provides the opportunity for the product to grow with you and ensures your continued connection to Nike as they will be able to improve your experience and provide new recommendations based on the data gathered should you choose to opt into the program.
Ease to use: 4/5
Overall, the Nike Adapt BB, with a retail price of $350, seems to be a steal for any sports enthusiasts and individuals looking to style themselves with a pair of elegant sneakers. Similar to the original iPhone introduced by Steve Jobs, the Adapt BB, power-packed with the most advanced technology the shoe industry has to offer, positions itself to take the center stage in disrupting how shoes are made.
It guarantees a unique experience like no other and is bound to keep you amazed for days ( while giving you those extra credits to impress your friends and family ).
Unfortunately, due to it's overwhelming popularity, all units have been completely sold out on the official Nike Store on it's debut day but if you'd still like to purchase a pair, feel free to check out the eBay selection here where you can find shoes of different sizes in original mint condition.
